It's the most unlikely friendship in pop music since SIR PAUL McCARTNEY and Rupert The Bear.

DAPPY, FAZER and TULISA met legendary rockers ANTHONY KIEDIS, FLEA, CHAD SMITH and JOSH KLINGHOFFER in an LA studio last week.

They had passed each other in the corridor where they are both beavering away on new material.

Eventually wideboy Dappy introduced himself to frontman Anthony.

He even invited them to listen to some of N-Dubz' songs – and amazingly the Chilis agreed.

Fazer said: "We're big fans of them so it was very cool to meet them. They just happened to be in the next studio to us, so we had to say hello.

"Our trip to the US has been jam-packed. We've been recording late into the night every day but managed one day off to have fun. We can't wait to share the tracks we've been recording with everyone."

A lot of wannabes and bigwigs are on a charm offensive at the Oscars this weekend.

But none of them are as efficient as the Camden scamps at social climbing.

They befriended PRINCE CHARLES at The Royal Variety Show last year but rock royalty is far more impressive.

It's a big coup for Dubz credibility. Def Jam bosses reckon they have a big future in America and pals like the Chilis will be very handy. They have sold 60million records globally and could teach them a few things about being rock stars.

It's a miracle Anthony is still alive. Although he is teetotal now, his antics used to make Hollywood hellraiser CHARLIE SHEEN look like a nun.

The US group are finishing up their tenth studio album while N-Dubz are close to completing their debut album for the States.

The Chilis' working title is Dr Johnny Skinz's Disproportionately Rambunctious Polar Express Machine-head - inspired by a friend's trips on acid.

Perhaps Dappy will now draw on his misadventures on Meow Meow...

And, by the way, Insider offers its congratulations to Melanie C on being nominated for an Evening Standard Theatre Award on Monday in the best newcomer category for her six-month West End stint in the show.

Longtime Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith sat in with Levon Helm this past Saturday. The drummer attended one of Helm’s Midnight Rambles as a fan and emerged partway through the Levon Helm Band’s set for on “All on a Mardi Gras Day” and “The Weight.” Smith—who has played with the Chili Peppers since the late 1980s—is currently touring with his instrumental funk side-project Chad Smith’s Bombastic Meatbats.

Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith says Jimmy Page has written and recorded new music, and he’s itching to get out and play live.

The pair share the same managers, and Smith admits he’d love to play with Page if the chance arose.

Meanwhile, Zep singer Robert Plant has revealed he’s bored with constant reunion rumours and wishes everyone would move on – because he has.

Smith tells Ultimate Guitar: “I’d like to play with Jimmy. Who wouldn’t, though? We have the same managers and he used to come to some of our gigs. I was like, ‘Man, do you want a rhythm section?’ He smiled. I could play Led Zeppelin songs all day – it was my favourite band.

“But supposedly he has a bunch of ideas and a bunch of stuff recorded. That’s what I’ve heard. I can tell he wants to play. He’s frustrated.”

Smith admits there would be “five million” drummers in the queue with him; and in the real world he’s just happy the Chili Peps are still going strong after 25 years. They’re back at work after a two-year break, with Josh Klinghoffer having replaced guitarist John Frusciante, and plan to release a new album next year with festival dates throughout the summer.

The drummer says: “I’m so fortunate – I get to play with the best musicians. We’re still happy to be doing what we’re doing. I want to keep getting better as a person, a musician, a friend, a dad and a husband. It all goes together.”

Smith’s side-project Chickenfoot are also recording a new album, but are planning to tour without him due to his Chili Peps commitments. Smith has said he doesn’t care who replaces him on the road.

Meanwhile, Plant has sought to stop any further talk of a Led Zeppelin reunion after he joined the band for a one-off show three years ago and decided not to pursue a full comeback.

The singer tells Tourdates: “It’s almost as if people can’t see I have other projects. It’s like a woman with white heels and a pencil skirt passing by will attract my eyes, but most will miss it completely.”

These are scans of the back and front of a little advert/flyer that came with my Hyde Park tickets.

The tickets arrived with the advert a couple of months before the gig (from what I remember) and as you can see it says "new album coming soon this summer". And that was in 2004. The next album didn't come out until May 2006. And they can't be talking about the Greatest Hits because that was release November 2003.

I guess the album was a lot nearer a release than I realised.

Bryan Ferry and Noel Fielding discuss Red Hot Chili Peppers collaboration

Bryan Ferry has said that he thinks Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea played the "most expensive instrument known to man" on his new album 'Olympia'.

Flea is one of a number of guests on the album, as Ferry explained in the second part of NME's video interview with him and The Mighty Boosh's Noel Fielding.

"[Flea]'s a big friend of Damien [Hirst]'s," Ferry said. "When he was playing in the studio with us, he was playing the most incredible bass. It was a Fender bass that Damien had customised. It's covered with butterflies, so it's a kind of an artwork. It's possibly the most expensive instrument known to man."

How are things with the Peppers?

"Things are good. Very good. We've cut a bunch of songs, so we're probably halfway through the record. I think we've tracked about 20 songs already, and there's a few more left to do. Then we'll whittle them down to make the best record. We always cut a lot of songs and see which ones rise and which ones fall - that's just how we like to work. But the new one won't be a double album like Stadium Arcadium, I can tell you that."

Do things feel any different with Josh Klinghoffer? How's he working out?

"Things are a bit different. You know, he's a different guy. But he's doing great. He's got a terrific sound, he's very musical, he's full of idea - we're enjoying working with him. Things are coming along pretty easily, so that's always a good sign. I've been playing with him for over a year now, so it's feeling very natural.

"What I'm really liking about Josh is how multi-talented he is. He plays guitar, bass, piano, drums, he sings…We've been very fortunate to have him come into our fold and help inspire us to try some new things."

Is his guitar sound radically different from John Frusciante's?

"I wouldn't say it's radically different. Josh is just Josh. He has his own thing, and that's why we love him. The sounds he comes up with are very pleasing to my ears, and I'm pretty sure they will be to everybody else once they hear him on this record."

If the Chili Peppers have dates booked for next summer, I would assume that you'd want the album out by then.

"That would be nice. We probably have three to four more weeks left for cutting basic tracks. Then we'll start doing overdubs - guitars, vocals, all the other things that go on a record. After that, there might be a couple of things to do in January. Or we could start mixing - and as you know, that can take some time. I'm just projecting and guessing, but I would say we'd like to try to deliver the album in March. We're definitely hoping to have it out by next summer. It's been a long time in coming."

On page four, Chad also says the following...

"The Peppers have festival dates booked for the summer of 2011 already , so I can't play in both bands next year."

The Charlton striker finds a noisy way to celebrate ending his drought for the club and by the way, it felt really good...

I scored my first goal for Charlton on Tuesday and as it was a late winner, I was in a mood to celebrate.

But the manager, Phil Parkinson, had called us in for a warm-down yesterday, so a glass of Coke was as heavy as it got for me after the 1-0 victory over MK Dons.

I live in Chelmsford, which is an hour's drive away so the journey can sometimes be a pain but I really enjoyed it on Tuesday.

I listened to the Red Hot Chili Peppers album By The Way and it felt as though the drive had only taken 20 minutes. I'd been listening to the album on the way to the ground, as well. Seeing as I scored, I might have to listen to it before every match now!

According to Koolmuzone, VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES drummer Matt Sorum and American guitarist, songwriter and producer Lanny Cordola (GIUFFRIA, HOUSE OF LORDS, MAGDALLAN) will lead a group of musicians from the U.S. that will travel to Pakistan for a month-long musical caravan throughout the country.

The Pakistan America Peace Through Music Project's goal is to bring Americans and Pakistanis closer together by erasing misconceptions and raising awareness of the diversity and beauty of Pakistan and its people, ultimately revealing the commonalities between Pakistani/Muslim and American cultures, to show Americans the Pakistan they never see in the mainstream media

Later on in the year, the Pakistani musicians will come to the U.S. for performances and events joined by their American comrades (including members of GUNS N' ROSES, VELVET REVOLVER, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, etc.), which will also include time for more songwriting and recording. Both the Pakistani and American "legs" of the gathering will be filmed for a documentary. The music and film will then be completed and released for sale on CD and DVD.

Further 'evidence' that John Frusciante has left The Chili Peppers

It would appear that John Frusciante is no longer working with the Red Hot Chili Peppers - so says a source close to the band in an exclusive interview with MusicRadar.

"Josh Klinghoffer has been playing with the group for a couple of months now," says the source. "Optimistically, the Peppers are trying to lock down a replacement for John, who has apparently quit.

"Mentally, John checked out a long time ago. He's interested in doing his own thing, his own albums - the whole big rock band machinery just doesn't appeal to him anymore."

No surprise

The news that Frusciante has quit can hardly be viewed as surprising. During a podcast interview with MusicRadar earlier this year, the guitarist was lost for words during a routine question about the status of the group. He paused for nearly 30 seconds (later edited) before awkwardly stating that the Peppers had "no plans."

Frusciante also refused to be introduced to be as 'guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers,' preferring instead to be called, simply, 'guitarist.'

Klinghoffer

Oddly enough, Klinghoffer is not only friends with the Chili Peppers but with Fruscinate as well. "Josh has been on everybody's radar for quite some time," says the source. "He's extremely popular within a certain circle of LA musicians.

"The big thing right now that the band will have to consider is, Can Josh write great songs? Can he help push them forward? Everybody knows he can play, but the Peppers need somebody who can come up with amazing material and get them moving again."

Pixies front man Black Francis wielded his weighty Rolodex and called on an all-star cast to perform at a marathon benefit concert last night at Los Angeles club the Echoplex. The five-and-a-half-hour extravaganza featured sets by Tenacious D, OK Go, members of the Pixies, Grand Duchy, Flea, David J and Kevin Haskins of Love and Rockets and 'Weird' Al Yankovic, to name a few. All of the artists donated their time and talents to help Winston Bertrand, a 10-month-old boy born with severe lymphatic malformations that require extensive medical treatment.

...Capping off the night was Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea, who played bass on Pixies classics 'Vamos' and 'Where Is My Mind.'

Well there has been a lot of rumours floating around recently about RHCP and John Frusciante.

One of those rumours is that John is leaving (or indeed has left) and is being (or already has been) replaced by Josh Klinghoffer.

So...Who is he?

Well, he's 30, he's from L.A., he is a musician (obviously), a songwriter and he is a producer.

He's a multi-instrumentalist: Drums, Guitar, Synthesizer, Bass, Keyboards, Piano, Vocals

Red Hot Chili Peppers related info

He toured with them in 2007 supplying guitar, vocals, percussion and synthesizers.

He has appeared on 7 albums with John Frusciante.

He has also appeared live with John.

Other acts he's worked with

He has toured with great acts such as Butthole Surfers, Beck, PJ Harvey and Gnarls Barkley.

He has also appeared on records by Perry Farrell, PJ Harvey, Gnarls Barkley and Neon Neon.

These are the words of an administrator on the Stadium Arcadium fan forum website. This person seems very trustworthy, as you would expect being an administrator of the site, and has made of 3,500 posts.

This is the message:

"I've been speaking to someone via e-mail over the past month and this person claimed to have close connections with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. At first I just thought it was a typical time waster making false claims, but the more I've been speaking to this person, the more I've become convinced that what they're saying is credible. It's not just because of what they've told me, it's also because of the information they've cited to me too. Everything collaborates with what's been going on over the past few months.

Essentialy they've told me that John Frusciante left because his heart just wasn't in it anymore and he was more interested in doing other things like producing and working on his own private projects. Apparently John DID join the chili peppers when they went back to the studio recently to rehearse, but John became too overbearing and this caused conflict in the band and he left as a result. The reason Chad said that he wasn't allowed to answer questions about John is because there are still hopes that he will return to the studio.

I'm only telling you this now as this person I've been speaking to has finally given me permission to reveal this information. They've told me this in good faith so I didn't want to jeopardize the level of trust I have with said person by posting this information up earlier. This person has also told me a few additional things which I've promised to keep private until I'm told otherwise, but these things also serve to increase my belief almost completely in what this person has told me. It's because of this that I'm stating that I'm willing to say that I personally think that John has left.

I really hope said person is wrong and my judgement is wrong too, but I really do think it's true now. I know this information still doesn't bring us any closer to some sense of resolve, but I just felt that I should share this with the fans because I am now almost certainly convinced that this is true."

Beats by RZA for free? What's the catch? The super-producer has come a long way from charging 20 G's a session.

"Musically, I got a friend of mine that's given me a big musical lesson," RZA explained to us recently in NYC. "His name is John Frusciante from the [Red Hot] Chili Peppers. He said to me that he doesn't make music no more for profit or people. Those that like it, love it or don't love it — he doesn't worry about the critics. He has enough financial security that he doesn't have to never sell music again. I don't have the same security, because I got so many family members. I'm never gonna be rich enough."

Still, with money coming from Hollywood, books and other ventures, the rap legend is letting the music flow freely, making dozens of records in 2009 just for his own enjoyment.

"I go to [Frusciante's] house a lot and make music with him," RZA said. "We just make music. I've made 100 songs this year, and probably nobody won't hear them but us who made it. It feels good, yo. It feels good to do it with no strings attached. Not having to worry about if somebody is gonna criticize it, if it's gonna sell. I'm past that. That's a great place to be. I did a project recently with Damon Dash, the BlakRoc project with the Black Keys. He said, 'RZA, if you in town, come by the studio and hang out. I got a few guys that like you. Maybe y'all can do some music together.' I went through, we had a good vibe, did a little smoking. We just did music. It's coming out. I don't know who got paid, who did what. I got nothing. It's nothing for me. It's an expression of art. It feels good to do it that way. That's how we started out."

With all of these projects going on, how do you find time to sleep?

Things are starting to slow down, actually. Thanks to [producer] Rick Rubin, I’ve just finished Kid Rock’s album, which came out really well. And I’ve started again with the Chili Peppers, which means I won’t be able to do any Meatbats stuff for a while.

So the Chilis have finally returned to work, following the 2006 double-set Stadium Arcadium.

Did guitarist John Frusciante, who in recent interviews seemed to express antipathy towards doing so, take some persuading?
[Sounding uncomfortable]: Well… at this time I can’t talk about that. I have been told to stay away from the John questions.

Who might produce it?

I really can’t go into any more detail than what I’ve said.

Flea Collaborating With Bryan Ferry

Roxy Music's Bryan Ferry has revealed that he is working on a new solo album that features members of Radiohead and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

In an email to fans the singer-songwriter announced that he is has brought in Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea to play on the album.

Also set to collaborate with super-producer Nile Rodgers from Chic, the record is set for release in the summer of 2010.

How It All Started:

Those sample lyrics are from the Red Hot Chili Peppers very first single, "Out In L.A." From that point on, references to California ("Under the Bridge," "Californication," etc.) have occupied almost as much space on RHCP albums as the shitty "rapping" does.

Why It Needs to Stop:

Sure, we all love the place we live in to some degree, or else we'd move. But there isn't all that much you can say about any place before things start to get a little redundant. If Springsteen didn't mix in a little sex music with all of those anthems about impoverished towns, at some point the frustration would overtake you and you'd find yourself at your local homeless shelter with a megaphone imploring people to get a fucking job already.

But Anthony Kiedis has an uncanny ability to reference Los Angeles no matter what the song is about.

A song about chicks? Best believe those chicks are from L.A. A song about depression? L.A. is super depressing, bro! A tune about drug addiction? Blame it on the City of Angels. A song about absolutely nothing? It's a safe bet that at some point, "wang dang dong bell flay" will be rhymed with "L.A."

It's enough to make a person pray for an earthquake, if not for the inevitable RHCP benefit album to earthquake victims that would surely follow (with a title like "Los Angeles Rocks." )

Unfortunately, the band's fascination with ham fistedly mentioning California whenever possible shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The first single off of their most recent album was called "Dani California."

Hell, at least take a hint from Sufjan Stevens and branch out to another freaking state.

I asked John to elaborate on his meditation practice:

'In your daily life, if you have a thought that's motivated through insecurity or fear, (or in a lot of cases garbage that your brain is manufacturing, that you find yourself caught up in) - it's the nature of our minds that once a thought arises, for that thought to become another and another, with our days going by with these trains of thought. These trains end up being interrupted by something circumstantial: You run into a person and start a new conversation and the thoughts go away for a second, or you sit in-front of a TV screen and that blocks the thoughts out. In your daily life you're usually consumed by these thoughts when there's no distractions. A lot of the time you're worried about whether this or that is gonna happen, or is this person mad at me, or am I not handsome enough, or am I not sexy enough or whatever it is. These kind of thoughts end up producing these really vast trains our brains are inescapable from, because the whole thing is being led by the emotions. The thoughts and emotions are tied to one another.

With meditation a lot of people have this misconception that the purpose is not to think anything, but to me the most valuable part of it is to establish a type of detachment from your thoughts, in which your emotions and thoughts are cut off from one another. The purpose when you're sitting down with a technique like Vipassana is to observe your thoughts and to not get involved in them. Let them move by like they're a cloud.

And so for me the most valuable part that I've noticed the effects of are: Before I meditate there may be some things I'm worried about, that I'm thinking about all the time. I'm pointlessly going from one possibility to another of what is going to happen if this doesn't happen, worrying about things. You sit down to meditate and let's say you're doing some sort of mantra based meditation for example, the thought comes into your mind of this thing you've been thinking about, but you bring your attention back to the mantra. Or with some form of Vipassana you bring your attention back to a body part or just observe the thought but don't jump to the next thought. And what happens is, in that one moment of where you made that decision, though the thought exists I'm bringing my attention back to the mantra. It's like you've untied the rope that you're connecting to. One second you were tied to building and the next you untied the rope and you were walking away.

And so in a situation like that where something has been bothering me, I sit down with meditation and the same thoughts come up; I continually apply the technique of centring my brain, doing the technique of the meditation. Coming out of it the same thoughts come into my brain and yet they don't produce the second or third thought. I've established a disconnection between them and it's almost as if the thoughts are afraid of me instead of me being afraid of the thought. You end up finding that the thought doesn't have the same power over you because in that one moment you disconnect with that thought the thought from your emotion. The thought occurred in your head but it didn't occur in an emotional state. It occurred when you were just applying the technique and the next thing you know the thought doesn't have as much power over you.

To me it wouldn't matter if you were thinking the whole time when you were meditating. As long as you were making that effort to do what the technique consists of, you're doing something very powerful by not letting your whole inner mental rhythm be determined by your emotions and finding another focal point for yourself that has nothing to with anything emotional. It might be boring to some people, but that's the point of it. To have a half hour of sever boredom is actually really valuable as you're not bored when you're worrying and being insecure; you're consumed by it.

People with problems, their lives are really exciting. People that create drama around themselves, their lives are really full of excitement all the time. That's not what I'm looking for in life. You develop that relationship to what initially appears to be boredom, and then you see it was more like my emotions were addicted to fear, insecurity and worry, and you can gradually through that process learn to disconnect yourself (the parts of you that felt they needed to be scared or insecure or to find some sort of excitement). By disconnecting your emotions from those thoughts you end up opening up room in yourself to find excitement in other areas, and more excitement from the places that can really do you some good like music or friends or books.'

John Frusciante talks to 'Mind' Part 2: How music influences state of mind

I talked to John about how music influences one’s mind state:

‘Everything that happens has a big influence on the state of mind. Our senses are constantly being bombarded with all kinds of things that are making a constant change to what goes on inside of us. We have so many tendencies that have been put in place by things that have happened to us in life, and everything that happens to us to some degree affects our tendencies in the future and affects our state of mind. To me what I’m noticing more with music- that separates it from incidents that happen- that change somebody’s state of mind, is that it seems to come through another channel besides the five senses. When the music is being created, the ideas enter the musician from an unknown source, through a channel that there’s no medical term for, no biological term, no psychological term for. There’s some channel that the ideas come through and the sense of musical balance that the musician employs in order to organise the ideas. That’s also something that there’s also no word for. It’s all the unknown, and a person that has a good sense of musical organisation has no idea where that sense came from. Partially it may come from loving and listening to music and really appreciating the balance and organisation of music that’s so cosmic, but there’s a lot of people who appreciate it that don’t have a sense of it, of how to manipulate that organisation, how to take control of it.

I would say that in the creation of music, where the ideas are coming from- why one idea means a great deal to me and another idea means nothing to me- and that there’s some sort of mental criteria to distinguish between these two things; it’s not something that anybody has grasped in any way. And then in the reception of music, I don’t believe it’s just the notes, chords or melodies in themselves (although there’s a lot to ponder just in those- why they affect people in the way they do). I also think that what’s underestimated when people are judging music is that you are hearing the intention of the composer or musician or the band or whatever. I believe that there’s a sort of 6th sense when we’re hearing music and some people have this. For some people this sense is clearer than for others.

You can hear when someone is doing something for reasons such as personal gain or ego gratification, and when the intention is to purely explore this wondrous thing which is the nature of music as it’s presented to us by the laws of the cosmos. If you put some crap, some commercial band who’s only doing it because it’s how they make their living and they get a certain amount of ego gratification from it- if that same band played a Fugazi song, it wouldn’t mean the same thing as what it means to somebody who needs to hear Fugazi to feel good. It’s not a matter of the song, it wouldn’t matter how well it was played; we’re hearing something behind the music. We hear the psychological state of the people who are playing or composing it, and I feel that something else comes through into the listener besides what’s apparent to the senses. I feel really sure of that.

I really feel that when you’re talking about the reception or music or the creation of music- the most important parts of can’t be quantified or measured, and there’s no way to put your finger on them. I feel like it’s that way with love and to any person who has a special thing; if there’s a guy obsessed with mechanics or if there’s a guy obsessed with plants or something. These things produce an excitement in people that can’t be measured by just the virtues of the subject themselves. There’s some sort of connection between that persons soul and whatever that thing is that they really love, and it seems like music has this direct connection to excite a much larger group of people than most isolated subjects. I think part of the reason for this has to with the fact- I think there are messages that are coming across in music. There are messages that music is conveying, there are truths about the nature of existence. In nature, you have your things like trees and flowers, grass, human beings and brains, water, and air. There are these other things that are part of the fabric of existence that exist- like for instance numbers exist as a part of nature regardless of whether there’s the human understanding of them.

In other words the human understanding of a number is more a symbol of the thing. We have no way to actually grasp numbers in of themselves, even thought they’re an inescapable part of existence. With music you have mind boggling things going on with numbers. The truth about numbers themselves is that they all exist as one thing together. They’re all dependant on one another. There’s no existence of 4 without the existence of 3. There’s no 1 billion without the existence of 2 billion. All numbers are interdependent on one another and need one another to exist, and so they are one thing. But it’s the nature of the human mind to perceive these differences from one thing to the other. I don’t think that these differences exist not only with numbers, but I don’t think a tree is any different from a person- is any different from the air- is any different from the water. I think we’ve been blessed with this psychological ability to be able to differentiate between one thing and the other. It’s all existing in harmony with one another. To me it expresses that no one thing is different from anything else. With numbers, every one absolutely needs the other one to exist, and so- are all one number. Or you could say numbers are all one thing.’

John Frusciante talks to 'Mind' Part 1: Mental Health and his Solo work

There is a level of understanding that comes with an ability to look inwards. Realisations come from the awareness of internal conflict and bringing unconscious thoughts into the conscious, which in turn awakens the mind and changes our perspective on life. Along with his work in the Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Frusciante also has a successful music career in his own right. His life is based around the creation of music with an extensive back catalogue of solo releases. John is a man who actively explores looking inward, observing thoughts, and letting go. He states that there are some key aspects that maintain a healthy mind-state: meditating, reading, writing, and music.

I spoke to John about these elements and how music can bring a whole host of benefits to our mental health and well being. I asked John firstly about writing thoughts down:

'It's been really good for me. I think it's being able to see the mind from an exterior position. It's another one of the issues that come up especially with people who have mental imbalances: that you're trapped in your mind; there's no escape. It's like being imprisoned. You're inside yourself, you're inside your body, your thoughts are inside your mind- you can't escape. Your thoughts aren't just moving along in some kind of cosmic orbit, they're determined by your surroundings and your conditioning. The realisation of the inability to escape from it, not being able to step out of your mind- the more you think about it, the more overwhelming it can become- especially when you're not happy with the thoughts that are in your mind, you're not happy with your surroundings, and you're not happy with the way people have treated you.

The thought that you can't escape from within yourself is really terrifying. To be able to examine your thoughts when you write them down is really illuminating because you can read them back to yourself 5 minutes later, and have a completely different reaction to it than you had when you were thinking the thought. It becomes much easier at that moment to look at what you've written and say: 'well that's true from one angle but I can also see it from this position.' Your emotions are directly tied to your thoughts and you had no ability to be able separate them. Then you read it a couple of days later and you're in a different mood, and by looking at it from this exterior position you're able to mentally put it in it's place in a clearer way. By the brain taking in those same thoughts but in a completely different emotional context, you're able to establish some sort of separation between your thoughts and your emotions; which if you don't ever write anything down and don't ever look at yourself from the outside, you're incapable of doing.

I've resolved so many issues of my childhood from writing- page after page, when I was all revved up about them. By writing about them and reading them back to myself, somehow in that process I accomplished a lot of the same things that could potentially be accomplished by going to a therapist every week for years. I found it within myself to forgive people that I'd always resented, I'd always felt like a victim because of, and through writing them down I was able to see the balance of it all, and to not blame that person for their own actions but to realise that the way they treat people is the result of the way people treated them. There's no more point in being resentful of another person for something they've done then there is of being resentful of life itself- which to me doesn't really make any sense. The brain that's making that statement 'I resent life itself' is only here by virtue of that brain, so who's the 'I' talking? The 'I' talking is nature itself. If you're attaching importance to the opinion that life is f****d, you're automatically giving credence to life because life is the thing that's talking and saying what you think. Something's built into our characters, we all think a lot of what we ourselves think! Each person thinks their opinions are very true and valid. It's a built-in thing of our character. But I think to do that with your thoughts is really important [to write them down]. It's really bad to get lost inside yourself.'

I spoke to John about being trapped in a distorted headspace with thoughts spinning around…

'It's a really interesting tendency on the part of people- is that they like being twisted. There's a part of you that becomes comfortable there and you don't wanna be released. I get like that when I'm in a bad mood about something and somebody tries to cheer me up, but I don't want them to cheer me up. It's like I'm happier being miserable than I am being happy. There are certain situations where somebody who would rather stay in their misery might be superior in their relationship to life than somebody who's constantly trying to maintain a position of happiness- in that, there could potentially be a kind of emptiness. Sometimes people who go through life sad are some of the deepest people.

I can't imagine it [writing] not being good for anybody. I used to be superstitious about writing down my thoughts, I only would write down poetry. When I started writing down ordinary thoughts, I couldn't believe what a difference it made. Sometimes you might write the same thing all the time 'I'm so sad, I'm so miserable…' I've written those same entries in my notebook so many times- the same exact words. There's a feeling of getting it out. There are times when just the act of writing it itself ends up bringing you to a new perspective. Sometimes it's not even reading it back; as you're writing it the train of thought is different as it's more moderated. When you're thinking things, your thoughts have the ability to go at this incredibly fast pace, much faster than we speak or can write, so sometimes the process of writing is also a process of slowing down the thought stream to where you're thinking at a slower pace. You come to conclusions by thinking slower that you could never come to when you're thinking faster.

"Bedrock Anthem" is a song by "Weird Al" Yankovic which was featured on his 1993 album Alapalooza. It is parody of "Under the Bridge" and "Give It Away" both by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The song also appears on the soundtrack album for the 1994 live-action movie version of The Flintstones, with a portion of the song played during the end credits.

The song portrays the narrator's desire to live in Bedrock, the setting of TV's The Flintstones, citing such perks as being the first Rolling Stone subscriber. The song features an audio clip of The Flintstones, which makes a corresponding appearance in the video.

Yankovic stated that, "I knew there was a Flintstones movie coming out, and I figured that for once I'd have my song out before the actual phenomenon. So I got to predate the movie by seven months. I'd always wanted to do a tribute to the Flintstones because I think they're a big part of pop culture. I did a lot of research, really immersed myself in the Flintstones. I watched over 100 Flintstones episodes, because I had to not only re-familiarize myself with the characters, I had to find actual sound bites and animation from the series to use in the song and the video."

The Video

The "Bedrock Anthem" music video is a parody of both the "Under the Bridge" video and the "Give it Away" video.

Flea Says:

"I didn't think it was very good. I enjoy Weird Al's things, but I found it unimaginative. It wasn't that great. Yabba Dabba Doo. I like Weird Al and everything. But you know everyone is hit or miss, except for me, of course."

Chad confirms RHCP working on new material (Oct 2010 release date?)

ClashMusic has learnt from drummer Chad Smith that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are working on new material with a possible release date of October 2010.

Interviewed for the next issue of Clash Magazine, Smith shared details of their plans stating, "We’re gonna write for a while, it usually takes us a while" before speculating that the release date would be "Some time next year, maybe this time [next year]".

Asked if Flea's experience working with Thom Yorke might feed back into the Chili Peppers new material, Smith said that his colleague had given him a cd of electronic beats to inspire him but that, at the moment, there wasn't an explicit electronic direction although he did speculate, "You never know. We’ve got songs with piano on them right now, so who knows."

'Calculus: The Musical!' puts math to Chili Peppers music

LANGLEY --- Though she stands in front of teenagers all day, math teacher Ginger Proctor says she's too shy to do any singing or dancing to make classes more interesting, but she's willing to find people who can.

Mrs. Proctor and other Midland Valley High School math teachers were intrigued when they heard of Calculus: The Musical! this past summer and decided to take a chance on the Cincinnati-based production.

"These students are in these classes (calculus and pre-calculus) because that's what they want to do, but they want a lot of examples," Mrs. Proctor said.

The songs -- set to such popular tunes as Madonna's Material Girl and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Under the Bridge -- give her that opportunity to drill rules, but in an interesting way.

"I think the songs will be stuck in my head the rest of the year," said calculus student Zachary Tisdale, 17.

He's perhaps the most surprising frontman not to try to make the jump, and thank the devil for that. While tracks like "Under the Bridge" certainly suggest he could make a Rob Thomas-like, big-ballad move, Kiedis seems dedicated to his mates, and rightly so. Flea and guitarist John Frusciante have continued to move the Red Hot Chili Peppers to new musical fields, and their interplay has served as a cozy bed for Kiedis' career. While Kiedis may be capable of solo glory, it's admirable he's saved his pepper for the band and spent his spare time acting and writing and, let's hope, improving his dance skills.

Jay-Z was an early champion. Kanye featured his him on 'Touch the Sky.' So, who is Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco's favorite rapper?The spicy answer might surprise you.

Lupe, who has spent the past year quietly working on material his forthcoming release 'Lasers,' took time to shout a little about one new song, 'Solar Midnite,' in a message posted yesterday on his Myspace page.

"'Solar Midnite' is my first commercial release that I actually produced as well as wrote," Lupe wrote about the track, which appears on the soundtrack to the 'Twilight' sequel, 'New Moon.' "The 'New Moon' team asked me if I could do a song specifically for the film."'Solar Midnite' is exclusive to the the iTunes version of the soundtrack, released on Friday (October 16).

Nonetheless, Lupe says he's still extremely excited about being a part of the highly anticipated film."They invited me to an early screening of the unfinished film, from which I pulled different elements that I thought would translate into a great song," he wrote. "I pulled in vocalist and bassist Graham Burris and acclaimed musician Matt Nelson to help fill out my vision musically and ... 'Solar Midnite' was born." Though not included on the physical soundtrack release -- an indie rock-heavy set featuring Death Cab For Cutie, Bon Iver, Sea Wolf and Radiohead singer Thom Yorke, among others -- 'Solar Midnite' will be heard in the highly anticipated film, which depicts a bizarre love triangle between characters Bella Swan, Edward Cullen and Jacob Black.

"The song basically deals with the chaotic love story that takes place between the characters," Lupe explained in his post.

As for the music, Lupe said that the song channels rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, "It's more on the rock side of my musical catalog and comes straight from my die-hard fanhood of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Anthony Kiedis, one of my favorite rappers."One has got to wonder what Jay and Kanye will think of that.

Tinchy Stryder wants Flea

Tinchy Stryder wants to work with Red Hot Chili Peppers star Flea.

The British rapper - who has previously collaborated with Sugababes singer Amelle Berrabah and hip-hop group N-Dubz - is a big fan of the bassist and would like to collaborate in the studio with him.

Tinchy - who despite being a hip-hop star once admitted to liking the Spice Girls - said: "Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' bass player, is pretty cool, it would be cool to work with him. I'm also trying to introduce the word 'Flee' to everybody... it's for when something is so fly, it's flee. Basically, he stole my word for his name."

Flea isn't the only rock star Tinchy admires. He is also a fan of Blink 182 - especially their drummer Travis Barker.

The grime star says he was "blown away" by the group after watching a documentary about them on TV.

He said: "Travis plays with Blink 182. They're good! I watched some programme about the band and Travis' playing blew me away."

Brendan Mullen: Flea remembers the Masque punk rock club founder

Brendan Mullen had a lot of friends. I was one of them.

When the Red Hots started in 1983, Brendan was booking the Club Lingerie, and because he was booking it, it was an exciting place to play. One knew that he would be playing in the company of interesting, inventive musicians, the avant of independent music, youth culture or not. Brendan created a fertile, exciting, creative environment, the type of scene that inspired musicians to reach out, to try and find new sounds.

Anthony [Kiedis] and I walked in there one afternoon to see him, armed with a boombox and our first demo tape. We were trying to hustle our act, saying and doing what we thought we needed to do to try to get a gig.

Brendan was polite but could have cared less whether we were cool, or popular, or could sell tickets. He wanted to hear the music. We sat down and played it for him; he focused and listened, making occasional insightful comments about the music. We were so proud and excited when he liked it and booked us to open for Bad Brains.

It was a huge step for us to get that gig, but in a much more important way, I felt profoundly validated to be accepted and acknowledged by Brendan Mullen, who was a crucial part -- a hub -- of a scene that for me had mythological status.

When I first became conscious of the punk, innovative part of the youth rock scene in L.A., it was 1980. We were hovering on the far outskirts of it; about as close as we could get was to hang out in the Starwood parking lot and get in to see shows once in a while. The more I learned about the wellspring for the intense punk rock scene that I loved, the more enthralled I was by it.

Universal punk

Then it was not the scene it would become -- macho and violent, with rules about haircuts and uniforms -- it was a freethinking, vibrant, artistic scene of groundbreaking bands like the Germs, the Weirdos, the Screamers, all groups who sounded completely different from each other but were united by their willingness to be their own freaky selves, embrace an intense new rhythm and raise a robust middle finger to the face of the rock music corporate structure and all of its musical lackeys.

Nursing the scene

When Brendan started the Masque, it was a pure act, creating a place for people he liked (the aforementioned bands and many others) to do their thing, have fun and get wild, no salesmen allowed.

It became a nucleus for a thrilling new music environment that gave birth to the Southern California punk rock music scene, which later gave birth to some of the most important rock music to ever come out of California: X, Black Flag, Los Lobos and then later, the Minutemen, Jane's Addiction and the (humbly I say) Red Hots. He also played drums for Hal Negro and the Satin Tones.

It was an exciting cross-cultural punk scene that embraced all races, genders, sexual orientations and any manner of deviant. It was beautiful. Just no phonies. Brendan Mullen was key in all of this. Brendan was also a part of and present for the first hip-hop scene that made its way to Hollywood, working on shows with Ice-T, Afrika Bambaataa and the Arabian Prince.
A broad palate

Brendan never deserted the L.A. music scene through its ups and downs; he always looked to what new exciting thing he could find, and in more recent years supported the music as a writer.

We always had great talks about music, of which he had a deep passion and an encyclopedic knowledge. He loved music from the Contortions to Return to Forever to John Coltrane -- he signed off on all his recent e-mails to me "A Love Supreme" -- and everything in between and beyond.

We would talk at length about any kind of music and all the fun stories and folklore that surrounded it, and reminisce about the L.A. music scene. He always had ideas, hopes and curiosities about more new and creative things to happen in the future.

One of us

Over the last year the Red Hot Chili Peppers had been working closely with Brendan on a book about our band, and we all spent many hours with him talking about our history, discussing the direction of the book, etc. Throughout all of it, we were grateful to work with someone who cared for and knew as much about music and its culture as he did.

But more than that, we were lucky to work with a friend, part of our family, one of us.

Whenever I came home to L.A. and saw him, I knew that I belonged to something, that I was in a place that was my home.

Brendan was an intellectual, a musician, a writer, a partyer and a regular dude. And I speak for all of us when I say to Brendan . . . a love supreme! Brendan has broken through to the other side!

Chickenfoot Prepare Limited Edition Release of Debut Album

Sammy Hagar's newest project, Chickenfoot (with guitarist Joe Satriani, Red Hot Chili Peppers' drummer Chad Smith, and Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony) will release a deluxe limited edition of their self-titled debut.

The band's original release has already been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America with over 500,000 in album shipments.

"This band is so intense and so loud," Hagar, who grew up in Fontana, said in a telephone interview over the summer.

The new disc will include the bonus track "Bitten by the Wolf," and a DVD of an hour's worth of behind the scenes footage of the band, music videos, interviews and concert footage from their European and U.S. tours.

Hagar said performing every night on tour was a little bit different.
"Every night we were just experimenting between songs," he said.

It will be available exclusively through Best Buy starting on Nov. 1.

The limited edition album will feature a reverse design from that which was featured on their self-titled debut. The original black album artwork was printed with heat sensitive ink and the new design will feature a white background printed with fluorescent ink.

"We're still creating as we go," Hagar said.

Did the Red Hot Chili Peppers sell out?

Among the many terms that should be considered cliché and overused, “selling out” is a phrase that is often abused by vindictive and selfish music fans. Bands are frequently labeled “sell-outs,” because their original fan base felt they became too famous. More often than not, this tends to be an inaccurate accusation. Not every famous band betrayed their fans and their principles for fortune and fame.

One could debate whether or not being famous is a good thing, but I don’t believe that every band that achieves mainstream success can be considered a sell-out. Nevertheless, no matter the band, the CD, the situation, someone will inevitably criticize them and apply the dreaded sell-out label, especially if he or she is a die-hard fan. This is something I cannot understand.
Bands that play together for an extended period of time slowly form their style and undergo an organic transformation, in many cases eventually sounding completely different than their initial music. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are considered a staple rock band in today’s music industry and have come a long way to be considered such. They gained a very loyal fan base in the late 80s for their rap lyrics and psychedelic funk sound, culminating in their breakthrough album Blood Sugar Sex Magik in 1991.

This album gave them some big hits, but the one everyone is most familiar with from this part of their career is “Under the Bridge.” The song was written as a personal poem about Anthony Kiedis’ drug use, and he didn’t intentionally write it for use as a song. Almost twenty years later, it is still considered one of their greatest songs. It also broke the mold for them. When they had their comeback in 1998, the softer side of the Chili Peppers allowed them greater mainstream success. You can bet the original fans gave them a hard time about it. However, so many other fans were able to appreciate their new music direction.

No one would ever make the mistake of calling a one-hit wonder a sellout. After all, a group defined by one big song and nothing more cannot be accused of changing its style to find success – success found them. How is this different from how other bands become famous? One day they get lucky and one of their songs becomes a hit, and that’s the start of the next phase in their career. The original fans may grow to dislike the very song everyone else likes, as they now have to share their secret discovery with everyone else. These fans get bitter, and as a result they start throwing that dreaded label around.

Thom Yorke and Flea: Orpheum Theatre, Los Angeles

The news that Thom Yorke had come to Los Angeles and formed a temporary supergroup with Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers was surprise enough to most Radiohead fans. Most were intrigued, but for those concerned with rock credibility it was like hearing that the chaps from Peep Show were taking a break to write a show with Jim Davidson, or that Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall was collaborating with Bernard Matthews on a turkey burger.
Then, for those lucky enough to get hold of tickets for the suddenly announced shows (first a "rehearsal show" at the 600-capacity Echoplex nightclub, then two nights at the glorious 2,000-seater Orpheum Theatre) the even bigger surprise was in seeing what would happen when Yorke's solo album, The Eraser, was played in full by this new, nameless band, also featuring Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich on keyboards, Joey Waronker on drums and Mauro Refosco on Brazilian percussion.

Harrowdown Hill, a gut-wrenching work that queries whether the death of Ministry of Defence weapons expert Dr David Kelly was really suicide, has been described by Yorke as "the angriest song I have ever written". So who knew that what it really needed was a funky Chili Peppers bassline wriggling through it? Yet somehow Flea managed to take this most haunting and most English of songs and make it his own. The Clock turned into something between trip-hop and dubstep, thanks to the pounding tribal beat of Refosco's berimbau, an Afro-Brazilian instrument used to keep time in capoeira slave dances.

Skip Divided saw Flea, a gifted trumpeter, parping into a melodica, and on some songs Godrich provided backing vocals. Yet the biggest surprise of all was seeing Flea and Yorke share the front of the stage to dance together – Yorke wiggling his hips while an electric shock appeared to run through his arms; Flea doing his unique loose-neck limbo, like a swan that has mistaken itself for a woodpecker.

"This music was all about making a dance record, in my head, so if you want to sit there like it's a cinema that's fine," announced Yorke, "but if you want to get up ..." And with that, an audience that included Hollywood actors Tobey Maguire, Anne Hathaway and Woody Harrelson leapt to their feet.

Later, Yorke was left alone to play three new songs at the piano: Lotus Flower, Open the Floodgates, and Super Collider, the latter involving piano chords that looped from major to minor with an unadulterated sweetness rarely associated with Radiohead. Then the band returned for an encore of Paperbag Writer (dedicated to Colin Greenwood, the only Radiohead member in the audience), Judge, Jury & Executioner, The Hollow Earth, and Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses.
Lily Allen, recently annoyed by Radiohead's support for guerrilla music industry schemes, may be even more annoyed now. Not only did this show require a marketing budget of zero but rehearsal time was only three weeks, according to Yorke, "so I'd like to thank these guys for working their tits off".

The biggest cheer of the night came during Atoms for Peace. "No more talk about the old days," he sang, "it's time for something great."

Radiohead's Thom Yorke debuts new band in LA featuring Flea

Radiohead's Thom Yorke debuted new material with an all-star backing band at an intimate venue in Los Angeles tonight (October 2).

The frontman rolled out several tunes with the new band, which featured Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, REM collaborator Joey Waronker, Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Mauro Refosco, and producer Nigel Godrich. Tickets for the last-minute "secret" gig at the Echoplex were at a premium, selling out in a matter of minutes and reportedly being scalped online for as much as $3,000.

Yorke was in incredibly high spirits, dancing, smiling and even joking with the audience, which included Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, actresses Rosanna Arquette and Ellen Page, famed producer Rick Rubin, and members of Neon Neon and Cold War Kids. "Welcome to the 'rehearsal,'" he said, miming quotes in the air with his hands.

He kicked things off with the title track from his 2006 solo album 'The Eraser' before seguing into 'Analyse' and running through the tracklist of his debut full-length. The band kept the pace, adding layers to the material and breathing new life into it.

Flea, who began the evening playing nonchalantly off to the side of the stage, gradually moved toward centre stage, sharing the spotlight with Yorke while jamming on his bass guitar. At one point in the evening, a member of the audience shouted, "Play some Skynyrd!" Yorke responded by flashing both middle fingers, saying, "You think I should be playing Stone Temple Pilots too?"

After a rousing 50-minute set, the band left the stage. Yorke returned for what began as a solo encore, performing the piano-based ballad 'Open The Floodgates' as well as 'Lotus Flower' all on his own. The din of the crowd could be heard above the quiet tunes, which prompted Yorke to say, "If you want to have a chat, go fuck off outside, all right?" The crowd cheered and then quieted down.

After struggling through the opening notes of a couple of tracks (the only evidence that this was, in fact, a rehearsal) Yorke invited the rest of the band back on stage to debut several new tunes that showcased almost tribal rhythms augmented by synthesizers and his distinctive falsetto.

"This one is brand, brand, brand, brand new," Yorke said of several of the tracks, which were received positively by the audience. The band ended the night with an explosive version of 'Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses'.

Last time music bloggers got excited about a Thom Yorke "collaboration", supposedly a video incorporating Banksy's urban art, it turned out to be a pointless and annoying hoax, perpetrated by the self-promoting clown who "directed" the video.

This time we're presumably dealing with the real thing, since it was announced via Radiohead's Dead Air Space blog, but it's still scarcely easier to believe: Thom Yorke has started a new band with Red Hot Chili Peppers bass-thwacker Flea. It's possibly the least likely hook-up since Snoop Dogg recorded a track with Buzz Aldrin.

Is it really a good idea? It seems so incongruous. I've seen Radiohead live more times than any other band, and perhaps my memory fails me, but I'm fairly sure that at no point has any member of the band taken their top off and gurned like an over-eager yoga instructor.

The new super-group - also featuring long-time radiohead producer Nigel Godrich - are set to play solo Thom Yorke tracks at two LA shows. Can we expect to hear a new version of 'Harrowdown Hill', punctuated by an extended slap-bass breakdown? It's too horrible to contemplate.

And since when has Yorke been a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan? Does he relax of an evening by firing up iTunes and spazzing out to 'Sex Rap'? Does he air-bass to 'Freaky Styley'? It would seem unlikely.

Radiohead and Red Hot Chili Peppers join forces

Thom Yorke has assembled a new band featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea and producer Nigel Godrich.

The un-named group, which also features musicians Joey Waronker and Mauro Refosco, have announced two live gigs in at LA's Orpheum Theatre on 4th and 5th of October.

They'll play songs from Yorke's 2006 solo album The Eraser and "new songs".

Writing on his blog the Radiohead singer said: "We don't really have a name and the set will not be very long cuz ..well ...we haven't got that much material yet!"

No further dates have been confirmed.

Radiohead last appeared live headlining this year's Reading and Leeds festivals in August.

Warner Music and YouTube End Feud

Warner Music pulled all of its music from the video-sharing site in December after the two companies failed to reach a new licensing deal.

The move resulted in thousand of music videos being removed, user generated content using Warner Music falling silent and artists had their videos blocked from their own websites if they embedded clips through YouTube.

Music videos from artists including Madonna, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Kid Rock were among those affected.

The dispute arose after Warner Music demanded a higher fee each time its content was viewed, which YouTube maintained was uneconomical.

YouTube has been embroiled in a series of disagreements with music rights holders, including the UK's PRS for Music, which collects royalties for songwriters and composers for music played in Britain.

The two parties reached a three-year agreement earlier this month, which involved the payment of a one-off lump sum.

For fans of Warner artists, things are looking up. The label is reportedly in talks with Vevo, a joint venture between YouTube, Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment, which is expected to launch this year.
